New Publication in BMC Public Health

Dr. Rajesh Melaram, Assistant Professor of Public Health, is pleased to announce the publication of his article, "BREATHE-CC (Bridging Respiratory Exposures, Asthma, and Environmental Health in Corpus Christi): a prospective cohort study protocol," in BMC Public Health. This publication describes the design of the BREATHE-CC Study, a prospective longitudinal cohort that will investigate how ambient air pollution, household environmental conditions, and social determinants of health influence asthma exacerbations and wheezing phenotypes among Hispanic children in Corpus Christi, Texas. Approximately 200 children with asthma will be followed for up to 18 months using monthly parent-reported questionnaires, electronic health record data, and geospatially linked air quality measurements, including fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅), coarse particulate matter (PM₁₀), ozone (O₃), and sulfur dioxide (SO₂). By integrating clinical, environmental, and community-level data, the study aims to improve our understanding of childhood asthma in an underserved Gulf Coast population and generate evidence to support future interventions and policies that reduce respiratory health disparities.

New Publication in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology

Dr. Rajesh Melaram, Assistant Professor of Public Health, is pleased to announce the publication of his co-authored article, “Prenatal environmental exposures and the risk of repeated childhood wheeze and diagnosed atopic disease,” in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. This study examined associations between prenatal environmental exposures assessed at approximately 12 weeks of gestation and respiratory and atopic outcomes in children followed through 10 years of age in the Isle of Wight Birth Cohort. Exposures included vehicle traffic near the home, indoor dampness or fungi, cooking heat source, and outdoor air pollution. The findings demonstrate that increased prenatal exposure to vehicle traffic near the home is associated with a higher risk of repeated childhood wheeze, with stronger effects observed among girls. A significant sex-specific interaction was observed between prenatal outdoor air pollution exposure and repeated wheeze, indicating greater susceptibility among females. No consistent associations were observed between prenatal environmental exposures and diagnosed asthma, allergic rhinitis, or eczema. These results highlight prenatal environmental conditions as important determinants of recurrent childhood respiratory symptoms and suggest sex-specific vulnerability to early-life environmental exposures.

April 2026 in Review

April 2026 was a month of strong research dissemination, student achievement, and community engagement for the Melaram Lab. The lab continued advancing its work in environmental epidemiology, asthma disparities, and public health education through both scholarly and outreach activities. A major highlight was participation in the 2026 Symposium for Student Innovation, Research, and Creative Activities (SSIRCA) at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, where undergraduate mentees presented research on cyanotoxin biomonitoring in Lake Corpus Christi, geographic disparities in asthma hospitalizations across Texas public health regions, and environmental health implications of cyanobacterial contamination in South Texas agriculture. The lab recognized the accomplishments of Jaden Riojas, Hiea Almekhlabi, and Emma Doria, with Hiea Almekhlabi receiving the Dean’s Choice Award and placing second overall at the university-wide competition. The lab also expanded its community engagement through the “Asthma Action Heroes” workshop at the Anita & W.T. Neyland Public Library, led by Hiea Almekhlabi and Karla Martinez, which provided interactive asthma education for children and families.

New Publication in Water, Air, & Soil Pollution

Dr. Rajesh Melaram, Assistant Professor of Public Health, is pleased to announce the publication of his article, "Daily Time Series Analysis of Ambient Ozone and Fine Particulate Matter Levels in Corpus Christi, Texas," in Water, Air, & Soil Pollution. This study analyzed five years of air quality data along the Texas industrial coast, revealing distinct seasonal patterns and temperature-linked differences in ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels. Using classical seasonal decomposition and autoregressive moving average modeling, the research identified persistent O3 elevations and oscillating PM2.5 concentrations in the petrochemical-intensive city of Corpus Christi, underscoring the need for targeted, pollutant-specific air quality interventions.
